July 24, 2013 - SolarCity said Wednesday that it plans to add 12.8 megawatts of solar photovoltaic energy to power up 7,500 military homes in Hawaii at Lend Lease-managed Island Palm Communities throughout Oahu.

The communities include Fort Shafter, Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Aliamanu Military Reservation, Helemano Military Reservation and Tripler Army Medical Center, the firm said Wednesday.

The projects are part of SolarCity's SolarStrong initiative, which is a five-year plan to build more than $1 billion in solar projects that provide power to up to 120,000 military homes in the U.S.

SolarStrong projects are currently underway in Hawaii at Forest City Hawaii military communities at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu, Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Windward Oahu and Navy Region Hawaii in Honolulu.

"Hawaii is dependent upon petroleum for approximately 75 percent of its energy needs, making the military's further adoption of solar a win for national security as well as the environment," SolarCity Vice President of Solar Development Aaron Gillmore said in a statement.
