Sonnedix announced that it has achieved the Commercial Operation Date (COD) for Sonnedix Los Frailes – its largest project constructed to date in Spain.

The 50MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant is located in Badajoz, southwest of Spain, built on 111-hectares of land, and connects to the Vaguadas substation.

The solar PV plant is expected to produce approximately 102GWh per year, which is the equivalent to powering more than 30,000 homes with clean electricity and avoiding approximately 16,000 tons of CO2.

In 2020, Sonnedix signed a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Statkraft, Europe´s largest producer of renewable energy and leading PPA provider for the supply of 100GWh of energy per year.

Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, said: "Seeing this come to fruition is wonderful, especially knowing the challenges our team had to go through these past couple of years with the pandemic, supply chain concerns, and economic uncertainty. Our team was able to deal with adversity to continue our commitment to the Spanish market, whose role in the energy transition is remarkable."

Sonnedix Los Frailes was built with Mytilineos as the main EPC Contractor and developed by Viridi RE group in collaboration with Sonnedix's development team.

Mytilineos, founded in Greece in 1990, is a global industrial and energy company with a consolidated turnover of €4.5 billion and EBITDA of €533 million (9M 2022) and employs directly or indirectly more than 4,820 people in Greece and internationally. Focused on sustainability, the company is supporting the energy transition in multiple ways.
